Synthese - Herstellungsverfahren - Fertigung - Anwendungstechnik behandelt die vier großen Themenbereiche der Metalle, Keramikverbundwerkstoffe, Polymere und moderne Beschichtungstechnologien. Das Buch eignet sich in erster Linie für Ingenieure im Maschinenbau und in der Produktentwicklung als erster Einstieg in die Materie. Neben den Herausgebern waren insgesamt 25 Autoren an dem Kompendium beteiligt.
Leider ist die Druckqualität der Grafiken, z. B. im Kapitel über Victrex Peek, nicht immer befriedigend.
