JAPAN: Japan Butyl Co. Expanding Capacity For Halobutyl Rubber at Kashima

Japan Butyl Co. (JBC), a joint venture of ExxonMobil Yugen Kaisha and JSR Corp., is increasing halobutyl rubber capacity to 80,000 t/y at Kashima, Japan.

“The expansion by our affiliate’s joint venture at Kashima will add 10,000 t/y of capacity in the region,” said John Lyon, ExxonMobil Chemical’s vice president for butyl
polymers.

“Demand for halobutyl rubber is expected to grow at about 6% per year, mainly in the Asia Pacific region,” he noted.  The expansion is expected to be completed
this year.

JBC in 2010 completed an expansion of its Kawasaki butyl rubber plant to 98,000 t/y.
