CHINA: Sinopec and KPC launch construction on Guangdong refinery, ethylene JV

Construction has started on the refinery and ethylene complex being built as an equally-owned joint venture of Sinopec and Kuwait Petroleum Corp. (KPC) at Zhanjiang, in China’s Guangdong Province.

The $9-billion project involves a 300,000-b/d refinery that will process Kuwaiti crude and a 1-million-t/y ethylene plant.  Production is expected to begin in 2015.

KPC Chief Executive Farouk Al-Zanki recently said his company is still interested in giving about 20% of its 50% interest in the venture to a strategic partner.
