Chair made of recycled PET is the Top Winner of the 2nd International Plastics Design Competition at NPE2012
The 111 Navy Chair, a replica of the modern design icon of the 1940s is the top winner of the prestigious International Plastics Design Competition (IPDC) sponsored by SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association. The competition attracted 32 product entries whose details and images were posted online many weeks prior to NPE on the IPDC site at www.plasticsdesign.org. A panel of nine judges evaluated the entries in advance of NPE2012 and in a special exhibit at the show itself. In addition to awards presented by the judges, there was a “Peoples’ Choice” award based on online and at-show voting open to anyone in the industry.
Cradle to cradle certification for Arnitel Eco
The entire Arnitel Eco family has been awarded a cradle to cradle certification by the sustainable design firm McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). The partly bio-based thermoplastic copolyester from DSM Engineering Plastics has been evaluated by EPEA, Braungart’s Hamburg-based consultancy firm.
Lubrizol introduces new materials for medical applications
Lubrizol has introduced new low density hydrophobic Tecothane TPU for medical applications. It is plasticiser-free and exhibits relatively low tack with use of significantly reduced amounts of lubricant, said the company. It can be used as a substitute for silicones in extrusion and injection moulding processes.
New purging compound for TPE processing
With Lusin Clean 1020 Chem-Trend has introduced a new purging compound for the cleaning of extruders and injection moulding machines in the processing of TPEs.
Kraton’s new slush moulding product available for testing
At K2010 Kraton together with Italian compounder SO.F.TER introduced a new SBC-based material solution for slush moulding processes as an alternative to PVC and TPUs. Meanwhile the product properties have been significantly developed further, e.g. the adhesion to polyurethane foam. Now the first product of the series, Kraton ST5100, is available for testing and is currently undergoing approval processes.
Scratch-resistant addition to Elastocon’s 8000 series
Elastocon 8078NL is the latest addition to Elastocon’s 8000 TPE series.
Apinat now available for films
Biodegradable Apinat from Api Spa, Mussolente, Italy, is now available in new formulations for the production of films using either blown or cast extrusion.
New antistatic materials
Nantong Polymax Elastomer Technology Co., Ltd. has developed thermoplastic elastomers with permanent antistatic and non-hygroscopic properties.
TPE for medical waste bags
Polyzen has chosen PolyOne GLS’s Versaflex HC TPEs to develop a waste management bag. The medical products manufacturer, based in Apex, NC, USA, showcased the bag at MD&M West in Anaheim.
Expansion of Versalloy series
PolyOne GLS has added three new TPV grades to its Versalloy HC alloy series: Versalloy HC 9220-70, HC 9220-80, and HC 9220-90. The new Santoprene-based materials with Shore A hardnesses of 70, 80, and 93, are drop-in replacements for a limited number of medical TPVs that ExxonMobil will decommercialise by the end of this year.
First Dolphin series production has started
The Dolphin technology, which results in moulded parts with soft-touch surfaces, produced in just a single process step, has startet with its first series application in autumn 2012. Daimler supplier Sole S.p.A., Oderzo, Italy, produces cockpit covers for the new Mercedes-Benz Actros by using this technology.
New Green Téfabloc compounds
The most recent addition to the Green Téfabloc range of compounds of French compounding specialist CTS, Tiffauges, are products using the starch-based Gaïalene resins from Roquette.
Reinforcing additive for lighter car parts
French automotive plastics component producer Mecaplast says it can make significant weight reductions in injection moulded TPO parts by partially replacing talc filler with Milliken’s reinforcing agent Hyperform HPR-803i.
TPE information day of PlasticsEurope and wdk
Thermoplastic elastomers are in the focus of an information day on the 28 June 2012 in Frankfurt / Main, jointly organised by two major industry associations: PlasticsEurope, the association of plastics manufacturers and the trade association of the German rubber industry (WDK). Target audience of the event are TPE compounders and processors, suppliers and additive producers.
NPE2012: Huntsman highlights new Krystalgran applications
This year at NPE, emphasis at the Huntsman stand will be placed on innovative products including Krystalgran, a range of aliphatic resins that are used to create protective films for optical and non-optical applications. Krystalgran films were first developed for use in the automotive industry.
