Modern lubricants and their influence on high performance FKM materials

von Dr. Cristina Bergmann, Jürgen Trimbach, Dr. Wolfgang Schmid

The influence of lubricating additives (antioxidants, extreme pressure- and antiwear-agents, detergents and metal deactivators) used in modern engine oils on FKM materials has been investigated. This study includes the influence of chemical structure, function and concentration of the additives on different types of fluorocarbon elastomers. The work concentrates on the influence of one additive, namely the succinimide/succinic acid ester dispersant additive on FKM degradation by employing ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), swelling and fluorine content measurements. Additionally, heat ageing tests were conducted with FKM compounds in fully formulated engine oils as well as in their respective base stocks. To characterise the elastomeric performance before and after ageing, the retention of mechanical properties, hardness changes and swelling degrees were determined.
