20 years of Dr. Gupta Verlag

Actually, we should have celebrated this anniversary already in July 2013, because our Dr. Gupta Verlag publishing company was founded in July 1993, or in January 2014, because the company’s first magazine appeared in January 1994. Either way, a full 20 years.

Much has changed in the world during those years, and also in the publishing company. From ­originally just one German-language magazine, GAK, there are meanwhile seven: two in German, three in English and two in Chinese, all of which deal with organic polymers, be they rubbers, polyurethanes or thermo­plastic elastomers.

This development was not based on pure company business decisions, but primarily on the commitment of all employees. Unfortunately, there were also sad events during this period. Two of our employees and my son died. My son, who had built up the publishing company together with me, would have certainly been very pleased about the anniversary.

We have now made some reorganisation in terms of staff. With effect from this issue, I am ­passing on the position of Editor-in-Chief for the rubber magazines, which I have held since 1972, to Dr. Ernst Debie. Angela Austin, the Editor-in-Chief of the polyurethane magazines, is pleased to now be supported by Dr. Wolfgang Friederichs. My daughter Indira Gupta, who has graduated in therapeutic education and has also obtained a masters degree in economics, is now responsible as a member of the board of management for the strategic directions of the company.

You might then say that everything is okay. But it isn’t!

At the last “K” an old colleague said to me: “You do indeed have worldwide renowned trade journals with many scientific and technical reports. But you were previously characterised by providing a magazine for “master craftsmen”. But what about that today? Who teaches the master craftsmen, foremen and machine operators now?”

He’s right to ask this!

Although I already have some ideas about how to tackle this task, much still remains unclear.
