This fifth international conference started with a session on rubber to metal bonding with an overview by R Del Vecchio on comparisons between eight different types of rubber.

Automotive applications of rubber bonding were a key feature of the conference. Henkel and Polycil gave papers on bonding of anti-vibration systems. Boss Rubber Technologies have been working on PSAs for applications such as bonding TPE weatherstrip. Chris Stevens of NGF has worked on improving rubber to glass cord bonding for automotive applications such as timing belts and EPDM weatherstrip sealing profiles. Rhodia Silicones discussed automotive adhesives.

There was a keynote address on tyre cord bonding from the world expert, Dr William van Ooij.

Rubber bonding must withstand increasingly aggressive and corrosive environments, particularly in automotive and oilfield applications. Thad Plasczynski talked about the latest Rohm and Haas adhesives for metal bonding in the most severe environments and there was a case study by Marek Gnatowski on a natural rubber-steel pipeline liner bonding failure. Phoenix Rubber has been working on oilfield hoses and the issues of bonding rubber to plastic liners made of PA11 and PVDF.

Advanced Elastomer Systems presented information on new thermoplastic vulcanisates with good adhesion to engineering thermoplastics. PolyOne have new TPEs for multimaterial moulding at high temperatures.

There were some unusual sources of inspiration in rubber bonding with Ewen Kellar describing a method of moulding a tacky profile onto elastomers, based on studies of the adhesives used by geckos to climb shear surfaces.

Environmentally-friendly rubber bonding is the aim in manufacturing. TACK-SERVICE and Lord Corporation have both made advances in this field.
