Stahl opens new Application Lab in Arzignano
On 12 October 2017, the chemical company Stahl has opened a new application lab in Arzignano, Italy. The lab will focus on automotive, leather goods, shoe upper and upholstery. According to Stahl, the lab will develop new technologies, create customised solutions and provides in-house training. Furthermore, customers are shown how Stahl’s leather chemicals' portfolio gives leather articles a durable appearance, while being environmentally responsible at the same time, said the company. In the Arzignano lab innovative sustainable leather solutions Proviera – Probiotics for Leather, Stahl EasyWhite Tan and Stahlite are highlighted along with the Stahl neo leather finishing portfolio
“Our new lab enables us to work side-by-side with our partners, sharing knowledge and creating a better future together,” said Alberto Cantone, General Manager Stahl Italy. “Next to stimulating partnerships, we invest heavily in the latest state-of-the-art machinery to continuously develop new possibilities and to physically test our ideas. A new range of high performance automotive leather finishing products, still in development, will play a pivotal role”.
Next to the Application Lab in Arzignano, Stahl also operates a Center of Excellence in Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa), which was officially opened in 2016 and is specialised in solutions for shoes and leather goods.
In addition, Stahl and the University of Northampton have launched a leather finishing programme designed for the automotive industry. The one-year course will focus on improving expertise and knowledge of surface coatings and their application in automotive leather finishing. “We see it as our responsibility to share our knowledge with others, as we can only achieve a more sustainable and transparent leather supply chain by working together,” said Frans van den Heuvel, Global Stahl Campus Manager.
The automotive-focused leather finishing Post Graduate (PG) programme is created for applicants with an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a science or leather related subject. The program consists of the following modules:
- Market demands and performance of automotive leather
- Finish formulation – automotive leather
- Finish application – automotive leather
The courses will take the form of three two-week training modules (October 2017, February and June 2018) and will be held at the Center of Excellence in Léon, Mexico. Several internal and external speakers will also contribute with focused seminars as part of the course. Students and professionals who successfully complete the training will receive a PG Certificate from the University of Northampton’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT).
Stahl CEO, Huub van Beijeren said: “This Stahl-UoN cooperation is a unique initiative in the industry and an example of how academia and the private sector can work together to make a positive contribution to the industry. We are very proud to offer this course and hope to continue with similar initiatives in the future.”
Rachel Garwood, Director of the ICLT, said: “By combining our world renowned leather education with Stahl’s expertise in leather finishing, we are proud to be launching the first Post Graduate Certificate in Automotive Finishing to be delivered in Stahl Mexico. I am confident the programme will enrich the knowledge and development of individuals working for leading automotive companies based in Mexico.”
