Evonik is investing a double-digit million euro amount in the construction of a new multi-purpose facility at its Geesthacht site in Germany.
The additional capacities created will be used for the production of a range of addition- and condensation-curing silicones and silane-terminated polymers, which the company sells under the names Polymer VS and Polymer ST. The products are used, e.g., in parquet adhesives, in adhesives for wound care or encapsulation applications in electronics. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2019.
In addition, Evonik is increasing its capacities for refinement of fumed silica in Rheinfelden, Germany, by approximately 20 %. The company will invest an amount in the low double-digit million euro range to expand the facility, which further processes hydrophilic silica to hydrophobic fumed silica. The product is marketed under the name Aerosil and is used for rheology control and as an anti-settling agent in coating systems, adhesive and sealant materials and as a thickener and anti-caking agent, e.g. in silicone rubber, toners and cosmetics. The expansion is scheduled to become operational in late 2020.
Furthermore, Evonik has started up a precipitated silica plant in Charleston, SC, USA. The company has invested about USD 120 million in the world-scale plant, in response to high demand from the tyre industry for precipitated silica in North America. Proximity to key customers was the decisive factor in the choice of the South Carolina site, said the company. Evonik will also produce the recently developed Ultrasil 7800 GR silica at the facility. The plant has created over 40 new jobs.
