BANGLADESH: Country may export rubber in 2008-09

Bangladesh may export rubber to foreign countries
after meeting the 10,000 metric tonnes of local demand
in 2008-09.

Some 3,000 metric tonnes rubber were produced from 700
gardens, out of 1300, in the Bandarban district in
2005 under private initiative Rubber Cultivation
Development Project.

Different multinational companies including DFIDC
produced total 10,500 metric tonnes rubber last year.

It was disclosed in a discussion on rubber cultivation
under private initiative for saving environment and
socio-economic development of the under privileged
people.

State Minister for Environment and Forest Jafrul Islam
attended the programme as chief guest organised by
Bangladesh Rubber Garden Owners' Association at the
Town Hall.

The government is expecting to produce 65,000 metric
tonnes and export rubber by 2020, after meeting the
local demand, said an official release.
