SRI LANKA: Ministry appoints Rubber Replanting Advisory Board

The Ministry of Plantation Industries has appointed a
Rubber Replanting Advisory Board recently.

Director General Department of Rubber Development W.
Rubasinghe said that the advisory board was inactive
for a few years but Minister of Plantation Industries
Milroy Fernando appointed the board recently.

According to the Rubber Replanting Subsidies Act
minister needs to appoint the board.

This board will educate the Minister on the industry
and the board will also make proposals to uplift the
industry.

The Rubber Replanting Advisory Board comprises
representatives from the Department of Rubber, Rubber
Research Institute, Ministry of Plantation Industries,
private plantation companies and other stakeholders.

Meanwhile the Department of Rubber Development also
expects to establish a rubber plant nursery in
Middeniya in Hambantota to uplift rubber cultivation
in the intermediate zone.

Spokesman for the Department of Rubber Development K.
Abeygunawardena said they have estimated Rs. 2.5
million for the infrastructure development of the
nursery and they expect to produce 100,000 plants per
year.

But nursery will increase the amount of plants
according to the demand. Most of the land in the wet
zone is utilised for rubber cultivation and it is
important to expand the cultivation in the
intermediate zone.

There are nearly 115,000 hectares of rubber land in
the country and most of them are in the wet zone.
