Read about the 62nd CPI Polyurethane Technical Conference that was organized by the Center for the Polyurethane Industry and held in October in sunny Orlando, FL, USA once again highlighted the impact of polyurethanes on the world today. We also report on the recent Foam Expo Europe that took place in Stuttgart and the big K 2019 show organized by Messe Düsseldorf that focused heavily on circular economy.
We also had the opportunity to speak to several experts from the industry: Read our interviews with Lee Salamone, Stephen Wieroniey and Ernest Wysong from the Center for the Polyurethane Industry, Alex Ehsani and Didier Grillot from Isochem Group, and Navin Pydugadu from Universal Polymers Corporation.

- Ratio assurance: More than just flow meters. A multi-tiered system for preventing, detecting and monitoring off-ratio conditions when spraying foam.
(T. Vandevenne, Graco)
Using spray foam insulation is a widely accepted method of insulating residential and commercial properties. Spray foam provides superior insulation, meets the demand for homes and buildings to be more energy efficient, and complies with new building codes requiring tighter, more energy efficient standards. Spray foam is made by combining two liquid chemicals; an isocyanate (A) and a polyol resin (B). Once these chemicals are mixed they are sprayed onto a substrate. Mixing these two chemicals creates an instantaneous chemical reaction. The two liquids, when mixed quickly, typically expand between 10 – 50 times in size and fully cure to the touch within a few seconds, resulting in the final spray foam product. Spray foam is manufactured on-site at the time of application, whereas most other building products – such as drywall, fiberglass insulation, oriented strand board (OSB), roof tiles, lumber and duct work – are manufactured in a factory and delivered to the job site. This allows for the materials to be spray applied as a liquid, allowing it to better insulate by completely expanding to fill gaps, cavities, around pipes, wires, in tight spaces, etc. Since it is manufactured on-site, having the proper controls in place to ensure it is manufactured correctly is important.
- Performance of ternary pentane blends in standard PU/PIR foam
(H. Böckemeier, Haltermann Carless)
Representing more than 50 % of all blowing agents used in the PU and PIR industry, pentanes are the most common ones today. Haltermann Carless has the unique position in offering all three isomers. The pure pentanes and binary blends are more commonly used. Blends of all three isomers are rare and not described in literature. However, ternary blends may have advantages for insulation board manufacturing that have been missed so far. A basic experimental set-up was created to further investigate this idea. For the experiments, a standard PIR formulation was used to compare the performance of the pentane blends. The experiments were planned and the results were evaluated with the help of a design of experiment software.
- Opteon foam blowing agents for spray foam and cold weather applications
(J. Sowder, G. W. Cauley IV, A. Blemings, The Chemours Company)
In response to the global need for low global warming potential (GWP) and sustainable blowing agents, The Chemours Company has developed and commercialized Opteon 1100 and Opteon 1150. These hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) demonstrate a wide range of attributes to spray polyurethane foam and construction insulation products. Spray foams are often installed throughout the year, and, in many regions, low winter temperatures present a challenge to installing spray foams. Many manufacturers specify a minimum substrate temperature to avoid installation issues that may include: reduced reactivity and dripping, reduced foam expansion and loss of yield, friability, adhesion failure and stud line cracking. In this publication, we will demonstrate how Opteon 1100 and Opteon 1150 can be leveraged to provide superior low temperature processing latitude in next-generation polyurethane foam products.
