JAPAN: JGC, Ebara, Ube & SDK study collaboration to build plastic waste gasification plants

JGC Corp., Ebara Environmental Plant Co., Ube Industries and Showa Denko KK (SDK) have begun a study of collaboration for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) business for plastic waste gasification facilities using the Ebara Ube Process (EUP).

Developed in 2000 by Ebara Corp. and Ube, the EUP gasifies plastic waste using partial oxidation with oxygen and steam to produce synthesis gases that can be utilized in synthesis of ammonia, olefins and other chemicals. A gasification facility using EUP has been operating at SDK's plant in Kawasaki, Japan, since 2003.

The companies said they aim to conclude an EUP licensing contract within the year and then actively implement sales efforts for gasification plants for plastic waste adopting EUP in Japan and other countries, and conduct EPC activities.
