Adhesion through plasma treatment

Plasmatreat has demonstrated at Fakuma how normally incompatible components in the injection moulding process can be joined by the use of Openair plasma-technology.

On show was an injection moulding machine with an inline plasma system for the production of balloon blow-up-mouthpieces. Usually the membrane and the mouthpiece are manufactured as two separate parts and are joined together by mechanical means or adhesives.

With Openair plasma-technology it is possible to produce the piece within a direct injection moulding process with selective bonding modification. The potential free atmospheric plasma-beam hits the PP tube, which then is moulded over with a TPE to form the membrane. By pretreatment with plasma the PP surface is activated and a bonding with the TPE is possible.
