Styron announced that the company will expand its SSBR (Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber) capacity with a new production line at its production facility in Schkopau, Germany. The additional capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes will allow the company to help customers around the world meet the increasing demand for high performance tyre materials, said the company in a statement issued on 20 December.

Dynasol has signed an agreement with China’s Shanxi Northern Xing’an Chemical Industry to produce and market rubber in China. The two companies are to set up a joint company which will build a plant in north-eastern China with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes of SSBR. This was announced in a company statement by Dynasol on 14 December.

Obituary for Karl Hehl

On 24 November 2010, Karl Hehl, senior partner at Arburg GmbH + Co. KG, died unexpectedly at the age of 87. Until recently he played an active role as an advisory partner for the family-run company. He used his ingenuity and foresight to make Arburg a well-known manufacturer of injection moulding technology.

UV-resistant grades of Sarlink TPV provide weight and cost savings for the roof seals of the new M6 seven-seat multipurpose vehicle built by Chinese auto manufacturer Byd Auto. The seals run the length of the vehicle roof on either side and contribute to the stylish, streamlined look of the M6 model. Each is a coextrusion onto a sheet metal strip of two Sarlink compounds, 5790B4 and 5765B4, with Shore A hardnesses of 87 and 65, respectively. The seals are snapped into place during vehicle assembly.

Lanxess and Dutch company Royal DSM N.V. have reached an agreement on the sale of DSM Elastomers to Lanxess for EUR 310 million. DSM Elastomers produces the synthetic rubber EPDM under the brand name Keltan. The transaction is subject to approval from antitrust authorities. Closing is expected in the first months of 2011.
