Paper and Poster Winners from CPI 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference

The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) congratulates the winners of the awards for best technical papers and posters at the 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference, which took place in Atlanta, GA, USA, 24 – 26 September 2012.

“Congratulations to all the paper and poster winners at the 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference,” said CPI Senior Director Lee Salamone. “The technical content is the heart of our annual conference, and these winners offered new perspectives and information that were incredibly valuable to attendees. All of the 63 technical papers and 26 posters helped propel us to a five year high in attendance for the conference. We are grateful to all our paper and poster presenters for their contributions.”

Eight-hundred and ninety-five people attended the 2012 conference in Atlanta, where paper and poster awards were presented during the closing session on Wednesday, Sept. 26 by Conference Chair Amanda Pugh of Chem-Trend and Vice-Chair Tony Lanchak of Momentive. Paper and poster winners are named for each technical session and poster category based on votes from session and conference attendees.

• Construction 1: Advancing the Science of PUR/PIR Construction Foam: Robert Tauchen of Evonik Goldschmidt Corporation for “Understanding the Relationship Between Surfactants and Aged Insulation Value in PIR Foam.”
• Construction 2: Advancing the Science of SPF for the Construction Industry: Bulent Ozbas of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. for “Low- or Non-Emissive Amine Catalysts for Low Density, Open-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam.”
• Elastomers and Footwear: Rafael Camargo of Huntsman International, LLC for “Renewable Footwear Systems Based on Polyols Derived from Waste Carbon Dioxide.”
• Environment, Health and Safety: Scott Ecoff of Bayer MaterialScience, LLC for “A Proposed Methodology for Establishing a Safe Work Zone Around an SPF Application to Exterior Walls of a Commercial Structure.”
• Flame Retardants and Combustibility (tie): Jeffrey Stowell of ICL-IP America Inc. for “New FR Developments for the Flexible Foam Market,” and Ofodike Ezekoye of the University of Texas at Austin for “A Comparative Study Assessing Factors that Influence Home Fire Casualties and Fatalities Using State Fire Incident Data.”
• Flexible Foams: David Honkomp of Dow for “New Formulation Technology for the Production of all-MDI Molded Viscoelastic Foams.”
• Processing Innovations: Carl Szczygiel of Frimo Inc. for “Innovation for Release Agent Free Foam Molding.”

On 1 November 2012, CPI will issue its call for papers and posters for the next Polyurethanes Technical Conference, which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, 23 – 25 September 2013. In the meantime, CPI encourages polyurethanes professionals to reach out to their colleagues and begin discussing possible topics for papers and posters for 2013.
