Silicone elastomers in medical applications – reduction of friction with LSR Top Coat

von Dr. Burkhard Ledig

Silicone rubbers which are used in medical and pharmaceutical applications must
fulfill a multitude of requirements. They must be biocompatible, i. e. comply to USP Class VI and ISO 10993 standards and they need to be chemically resistant to a variety of cleaning fluids (CIP) and resistant to various sterilisation techniques.

The liquid silicone series Silopren LSR 4020-4080 from Momentive Performance Materials fulfills these requirements. They are prepared in a special filling process and delivered batchwise with a EP 1.3.2 certificate.

For some applications it is advantageous to reduce the coefficient of friction. This can be achieved with the also biocompatible LSR Top Coat TP3719 which can be applied on all silicone products, i. e. room temperature vulcanisable (RTV), high consistency (HCR) and liquid silicone (LSR) products. This may substantially reduce the friction of these products.
