Silicone rubber: The material of choice to meet new challenges
von H. P. Wolf
Silicone rubbers are providing answers to new and more challenging application and specification requirements across industries. This paper addresses the unique properties and performance characteristics that make silicone rubber the material of choice to meet the wide range of new applications challenges presented in the automotive, electrical and consumer manufacturers markets. In the automotive industry the example of the turbocharged engines illustrates the flexibility and performance characteristics of fluorosilicone.
In addition, technological developments in the field of liquid fluorosilicone rubbers are presented. In the electrical industry, the paper explains the benefits of using silicone rubber as well as the differences within high consistency silicone rubbers and liquid silicone rubbers. In this industry, some of the main characteristics of silicone rubber are lighter weight, greater mechanical strength, greater seismic resistance, UV and weathering resistance, erosion resistance, low fire propagation and isolation maintenance.
Finally, the paper stresses the advantages of using liquid silicone rubber in a growing range of consumer products due to its uniqueness in terms of processability, clarity and mechanical properties.
