Hydrophilisation of silicone rubber for biomedical applications

von F. Abbasi, K. Jalili

This paper reviews methods of preparing hydrophilised poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) polymers to improve their properties for biomedical applications. The modification methods are discussed under two different categories: bulk and surface modification techniques. Surface modification techniques include physical and chemical techniques to modify polymer surfaces. Bulk modification techniques include blending, copolymerisation, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) and functionalisation.

This work emphasises on our recent studies on silicone rubber modification by laser-induced graft polymerisation and sequential interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) preparation methods that were, respectively, used for surface and bulk modifications.
