Reinforcing effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes in carbon black filled NR compounds

von Prof. Dr. Franco Cataldo

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied as reinforcing filler in a natural rubber based formulation as partial replacement of carbon black. The reinforcing effect exerted by the addition of MWCNTs was dramatic.

Using the Einstein-Guth equation the reinforcement due to the MWCNTs has been evaluated quantitatively and it has been shown that it derives from the anisotropy factor ϕ (or shape factor) of MWCNTs which reaches the value of 52.5, one order of magnitude higher than the ϕ a reinforcing carbon black where the shape factor is ~6.
