BMS LLC installs new central chiller at South Deerfield facility

Bayer MaterialScience LLC's South Deerfield, MA, USA, facility recently installed a new energy-efficient process cooling system. The new central chiller replaces many small systems that were running inefficiently, causing maintenance issues and downtime.

According to BMS LLC, the new system offers improved reliability as well as energy savings and maintains a desired water temperature of 45 – 50 °F in an insulated piping system. The company incorporated the new central chiller into its existing cooling tower system and process water loop. By doing this, the South Deerfield facility was able to focus the chilled water system on critical process points. The new chiller also allows for quicker and easier monitoring of the system.

“The new central chiller supports Bayer's commitment to sustainability by streamlining our process cooling system,” said Shaun Gaus, General Manager, Functional Films NAFTA, BMS LLC. “By switching to one central chiller, we will save more than 400,000 kWh annually and reduce maintenance costs.”

The South Deerfield facility manufactures and sells thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polycarbonate (PC) and polycarbonate blend, and other speciality film and sheet for use in various market segments, including medical, sports/recreation, automotive and safety/security.
