On 14 September 2021, Royal DSM announced it is simplifying its operating structure and reorganising its Health, Nutrition & Bioscience activities into three Business Groups. At the same time, DSM confirmed it has started a review of strategic options for both Materials businesses, including a possible sale. The Materials cluster comprises DSM Engineering Materials and DSM Protective Materials. The cluster comprises a portfolio of speciality materials for global end-markets including electrical components and electronics, automotive, food packaging, medical, personal protection, commercial marine and apparel.

As reported by various German news portals, including Rheinische Post, Handelsblatt and Süddeutsche Zeitung, on 3 September 2021, Covestro plans to cut up to 1,700 jobs worldwide, including more than 900 at its four German sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen, Krefeld and Brunsbüttel, by the end of 2023.

Lanxess announced that it has completed the acquisition of Emerald Kalama Chemical on 3 August 2021. The US-based company is a leading manufacturer of speciality chemicals. Lanxess signed the purchase agreement on 14 February 2021. All required regulatory approvals have been received. Lanxess said it financed the purchase price of around USD 1.04 billion (EUR 870 million) from liquid funds.

The Italian plastics and rubber processing machinery and moulds manufacturers' association, Amaplast, announced a positive trend for plastics and rubber processing machinery in the first half of 2021: the latest mid-year survey conducted by the MECS Statistical Study Center recorded double-digit growth in both turnover and orders, consolidating the climate of renewed faith in the sector after the long and difficult period of the pandemic. With respect to January – June 2020, turnover has increased by +11 %. Domestic machines sales have remained high while demand abroad principally regards replacement parts.

Arburg has announced to attend the PIAE Europe congress in Mannheim, Germany, from 8 to 9 September 2021 as exhibitor, and will in addition also give an expert presentation. The renowned international congress for plastics in the automotive industry, held by the Association of German Engineers (VDI), will be held as a hybrid event this year. In the “Sustainable use of plastics” section of the programme, Dr. Thomas Walther, head of Application & Process Development at Arburg, will talk about the R-Cycle project, for which Arburg is the only mechanical engineering partner (9 September, 12:30pm). Trendsetting automotive components will be showcased in the foyer, at stand 119.

The Institute for Plastics Processing (Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung – IKV) invites to the 2nd International Symposium on Plastics Technology on 14 and 15 March 2022 in Aachen, Germany. In 2020, the scientific committee of the Symposium received contributions from 14 nations, which dealt with innovative topics in plastics technology and ensured a wide-ranging programme. Now the Call for Papers is open again and contributions are being sought for next year's Symposium.

Olin Corporation announced that it has entered into an agreement with Ashta Chemicals, Inc. to purchase and sell the chlorine produced at Ashta's headquarters and production facilities in Ashtabula, OH, USA. Olin said existing contracts will be honoured for chlorine customers of both companies. Olin is a global manufacturer and distributor of chemical products and a leading U.S. manufacturer of ammunition.
