ExxonMobil finishes Singapore expansion; Ethylene output starting in few months

ExxonMobil has completed the multi-billion dollar expansion of its Singapore petrochemical complex and launched startup operations at its new 1-million-t/y ethylene steam cracker.

The project included two 650,000-t/y polyethylene plants, a 450,000-t/y polypropylene plant, a 300,000-t/y specialty elastomers unit, an aromatics extraction facility to produce 340,000 t/y of benzene and a 125,000-t/y oxo-alcohol expansion, all of which are completed and beginning operation.

Ethylene production, originally scheduled to begin in 2011, is expected to start in the next few months. The expansion is powered by a new 220-megawatt co-generation plant, allowing for the efficient generation of electricity to run pumps, compressors and other equipment, while at the same time producing additional steam needed in the production processes, the company said.

“We have doubled the size of our finished product capacity in Singapore, making this the largest chemical expansion project in ExxonMobil history,” noted Steve Pryor, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Co.
