SINGAPORE: Asahi Kasei advancing S-SBR expansion with construction of 2nd Singapore unit

Asahi Kasei Chemicals has advanced plans for expanding its solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) capacity and announced its decision to proceed with construction of a second S-SBR plant on Jurong Island, Singapore.

The second unit will have a capacity of 50,000 t/y and will be built adjacent to a 50,000-t/y S-SBR plant, which is currently under construction and scheduled to come on stream in May 2013. The second plant is scheduled to start production in January 2015.

Asahi Kasei, noting that it is making “proactive capital investments to expand its S-SBR operations,” said it “will continue to study additional capacity expansions for S-SBR in line with rising demand to attain the world’s No. 1 position in the field of S-SBR for fuel-efficient high-performance tires.” The company now has 140,000 t/y of S-SBR capacity at plants in Kawasaki and Oita, Japan.
