OMAN: Saltic LLC’s chlor-alkali & EDC project jeopardized by electricity allocations

Saltic LLC FZC’s chlor-alkali and ethylene dichloride (EDC) project in Oman could be abandoned following Oman Power and Water Procurement Co.’s (OPWP) decision to cancel electricity allocations for the project, according to local media reports.

Saltic had already awarded Hanwha Engineering & Construction an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the USD 550-million project to produce 1,000 t/d of caustic soda and 1,231 t/d of EDC in Oman’s Salalah Free Zone.

OPWP’s action “puts into serious doubt the ongoing implementation of the project, which will remain in limbo until a decision is taken to restore the allocation of 150 megawatts (of electricity) earmarked for the project,” said a Saltic executive.

“Saltic has already expended a considerable amount of time, money and resources in advancing the project to this stage. With contracts already in place . . . , as well as supply of raw material and off take of output, among a host of other commitments, including land allocations in Salalah Free Zone and Salalah Port Area, we now find ourselves in a huge quandary,” he added.
