MALAYSIA: Tyre recycling plant ready soon

Source: Daily "The Star", Kuala Lumpur

Octagon Consolidated Bhd’s associate company Advanced

Pyrotech Sdn Bhd (APT) expects revenue of about US$10

million from its soon-to-be operational RM110 million

continuous process pyrolysis plant in Pulau Indah,

Selangor in the year ending Dec 31, 2008.

Octagon executive director Siti Fatimah Mohd Shariff

said the revenue would be mainly from a seven-year

contract it had secured from a South Korean company.

She said the plant, which would be operational early

next year, would recycle 43,800 tonnes of waste tyre

per annum, producing about 21,900 tonnes of recovered

oil, 13,140 tonnes of carbon black and 4,380 tonnes of

steel. The oil and carbon black are mainly for export.

“The oil and carbon black are fetching US$255 per

tonne and US$305 per tonne respectively,” she told a

media briefing.

The pyrolysis plant, which will utilise South Korean

technology, is believed to be world’s first commercial

120-tonne per day continuous process pyrolysis plant

for treating waste tyre.

APT chief executive officer Jonathan Lee said the

company built the Pulau Indah plant after successfully

operating its prototype plant in Sunway Damansara

Technology Park. Lee said APT would initially process

imported used tyre chips.

The company, he said, would work with the Government

towards regulating a tyre disposal and collection

system as well developing transfer stations before

processing domestic tyres.

APT is a 51:49 joint venture between Octagon and K.K.

Incinerator Eng. & Const. (M) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned

subsidiary of South Korea’s K.K Incinerator

Engineering & Construction Co Ltd.

K. K. Incinerator Engineering is involved in the

provision of environmental engineering solutions

including incineration, water treatment, pyrolysis,

flue gas treatment, energy plant and related system

design software.
