Sri Lanka's Ministry of Plantation has taken measures to spread rubber cultivation to the Northern Province of the island.

The Ministry has selected Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts where lot of land is available.

A spokesman of the Rubber Research Institute at Agalawaththa said that 1,000 rubber saplings are to be planted in Northern Province as a pilot project.

Rubber plantations were introduced to Sri Lanka in colonial times and the wet zone was identified as favorable climate zone for rubber.

The Rubber Research Institute conducted experiments in Monaragala and Hambanthota districts which have relatively dry climate and new rubber varieties have been developed that are suitable for the areas like Northern Province, the Rubber Research Institute says.
