Processing aids for the manufacture of integral skin foam parts

Integral skin foam is fairly common in the polyurethane industry and is used in a number of markets, including automotive interiors, furniture parts, and recreational/utility vehicle components. Achieving a high-quality surface appearance of the integral skin foam parts is crucial to that business. In addition, many integral skin applications have gloss and colour matching requirements that must be met.

Chem-Trend offers a comprehensive portfolio of processing aids for the manufacture of integral skin foam components, consisting of tailor-made release agents, mould sealers, and mould cleaners.

“Chemical processing aids have a decisive impact on the surface quality of the finished parts”, explained Pascal Botzong, European Business Director PU at Chem-Trend. “To reach best results, it is indispensable to take the specific operation requirements and process parameters into account. This not only ensures flawless results, but in many cases also helps increase production efficiency while at the same time reducing costs.”

According to Chem-Trend, its water-based mould release agents ensure easy, flawless demoulding as well as a high-quality surface finish. Ancillary products can be used to seal microporosity in the mould, and protect mould surfaces against chemical and mechanical damage. By means of special mould cleaners, build-up from the production process can be removed gently and without damage to the mould surface structure. The products for integral skin foam parts can be used with or without in-mould paints. In addition, the use of suitable release agents can adjust the component’s gloss levels to low-gloss or high-gloss, depending on the mould surface, says the company.
