BANGLADESH: International plastic summit to woo foreign investors

Bangladesh has the potential to export plastic products worth about Tk 40 billion each year while the plastic goods worth about Tk 200 billion are being produced and supplied internally.

 

”The usage of plastic goods increases about 20 per cent (annually) . . . The government gets Tk 20 billion as of its revenue income from this sector,” Jashim Uddin, president of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and  Exporters Association (BPGMEA) said Wednesday (23 Dec 2015).

Highlighting the significance of the plastic sector he categorically said, “The plastic industry has a great prospect and a four-day International Plastic Summit in private partnership will be held in Dhaka from 20 January 2016 aimed at creating the opportunity for an excellent gathering of the international suppliers and buyers and bringing foreign investment and economic growth to Bangladesh.”

On the upcoming international summit, former BPGMEA president Shamim Ahmed said the four-day summit includes 11th International Plastic, Packaging and Printing Industrial Fair (IPF), view-exchange meetings of the member countries, council meeting of Asia Plastic Forum (APF), seminar and discussion on ‘Problems and Prospects of Plastic Waste Recycling in Bangladesh” and 16th AFP caucus meeting.

He said 150 foreign delegates would take part in the council and total 350 including 200 foreign booths or stalls will be set up in the summit fair. The four-day Dhaka Summit will begin on 20 January at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed is expected to be present in the inaugural session as the chief guest while State Minister for Finance and Planning M.A. Mannan will attend as the special guest, according to a news agency report.
