Hennecke laid the foundation for the development of a polyurethane spray technology in 1998 in order to establish an efficient product range from it in 2004 under the generic term PUR-CSM (Polyurethane Composite Spray Moulding). This product range implements highly flexible plant concepts in several areas of automotive and non-automotive applications. A key area of the CSM product portfolio, the so-called sandwich load floor technology PREG is celebrating a special occasion at the JEC World 2017: the commissioning of the 100th PUR-CSM PREG plant worldwide. With this, another Hennecke customer will be entering the group of companies that promotes lightweight construction in vehicles with the large-scale production of composite products on a paper core basis.

KraussMaffei's Reaction Process Machinery division has launched a new mould carrier, which is used in polyurethane encapsulation of steering wheels. According to the company, the mould carrier provides high flexibility plus good operability since the clamp has a tilting option that is continuously and individually adjustable.

Covestro has developed the DirectCoating process which enables the production of polyurethane-coated, injection-moulded components for the automotive interior in just one step.   After production in the injection mould, the plastic substrate is transferred to a second, minimally larger cavity, into which the coating system is injected via a RIM mixing head. This creates a PU-coated component with outstanding properties that requires virtually no post-processing.

Hybrid processes and materials made of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) and metal for the automotive lightweight construction of tomorrow are the focus of the LEIKA research project, which KraussMaffei is advancing in collaboration with the Institute for Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at Dresden University of Technology and other partners from industry and research academia. A new lab system at the Institute for Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology stands at the centre of the development work. This system allows FRP-metal hybrid materials to be formed and back injected in one step.
