INDONESIA: Natural rubber industry performed poorly in 2018
Indonesia’s natural rubber exports reached a value of USD 3.95 billion in 2018, according to sources in Jakarta. That makes the commodity the country’s sixth-biggest exported product.
However, the value recorded last year was 22.7 percent lower than the USD 5.11 billion seen in 2017. Last year also saw a 6 percent year-on-year (yoy) decrease in Indonesia’s rubber export volume to 2.81 million tons.
The main cause of the weak performance last year was a lower global price of natural rubber, as demand decreased, particularly because of the trade war between the United States and China. Natural rubber has been one of Indonesia’s key export commodities for many years.
