Bayer MaterialScience closes TDI plant

BayerMaterialScience, Leverkusen, Germany, has closed its 50 kt/yr toluene diisocyanate (TDI) facility at New Martinsville/West Virginia, USA. The closure completes the company’s plan to consolidate its TDI production into “world-scale” facilities in Dormagen and Brunsbuettel, Germany; and in Baytown, Texas, as well as a planned facility in Caojing, China, to start up in 2009. ”This closing completed the restructuring and consolidation of Bayer’s TDI business that we have outlined in the past," said Jim Newport, general plant manager at the New Martinsville facility, in a 24 May announcement. Bayer MaterialScience said it will continue to produce other isocyanates and polyols, coatings raw materials and thermoplastic polyurethanes at New Martinsville.
