The chief executive officers of 11 major tyre manufacturers from the USA, Europe and Asia met in Los Angeles Feb. 9 to set an agenda for their global research program dealing with the potential environmental and health impacts of their products.

The imminent closing of the Mayfield, KY, USA, tyre plant, will leave a gaping hole in the area economy.

US tyre manufacturers have seen their shares rise over the past six months as natural rubber and oil prices declined and a strike ended at one of the largest companies in the sector.
