BASF: Energy-efficient construction elements
At K 2019, BASF unveiled Elastopir Blue, a new PU rigid foam solution with a low lambda value (down to λD = 19 mW/m âˆ™K), that is said to achieve exceptional standards of energy efficiency while at the same time setting new standards for sandwich panels. According to the company, highly energy-efficient construction elements have a positive effect on the environment in the construction sector. This also applies to industrial buildings, cold stores, deep-freeze warehouses, and other commercial buildings.
With Elastopir Blue as the core material, it is possible to produce thinner panels with significantly improved insulation performance, said BASF. When modern blowing agents such as cyclopentane or HFOs are used, the PU system’s optimised cell structure is said to yield a core material with very good mechanical properties and a high surface quality. The quantity of blowing agents used can be optimally adapted to customer-specific requirements. In addition, Elastopir Blue is said to feature very good fire protection properties. This is also possible without halogen and thus contributes further to climate-friendly construction, said the company.
This is also made possible by successful customer cooperation. “We’re delighted with the excellent cooperation with our long-standing partner Romakowski GmbH & Co. KG, Buttenwiesen, who also manufactured the panels exhibited at K 2019 with Elastopir Blue,” said Roland Fabisiak, Team Leader Technical Development, Construction Conti EMEA at BASF Polyurethanes.
According to BASF, construction elements with an Elastopir Blue core material can also make their mark on production and costs. Faster curing of the panels increases belt speed and allows increases in production capacity. In addition, the new solutions offer better adhesion of the foam to the upper facing. The possibility of combining the system with a BASF adhesion promoter also ensures very good adhesion to the lower metal facing.
Thanks to the company’s patented Fixed Poker technology, the application of the liquid PU mixture is smooth and trouble-free, thus improving the panels’ surface quality. With Elastopir Blue, future-oriented construction can be realised without losing out on the benefits of efficient production, said BASF.
