A new flame retardant MDI prepolymer for polyurea
von ir. Anil C. Laurent, Ian Rimmer
Following discussions with customers, it became clear to chemists at Huntsman Polyurethanes that polyurea formulators needed a new FR MDI prepolymer in their toolbox to meet the future challenges of flame retardancy. The use of polyurea in Europe continues to grow in parallel with the requirements of formulators, many of whom are SMEs, to meet fire standards. The use of hot spray polyurea systems in roof coatings, tunnelling, and underground transport systems is a growth application. However within these market sectors, formulators are increasingly aware of the need to meet an EU B2 Norm for fire performance. Although regulations are still under discussion, the development of Suprasec 2154 is a proactive response by Huntsman’s Polyurethanes division to the anticipated introduction of this standard in the near future. Historically it has been difficult for formulators to add flame retardant properties to polyurea without compromising overall coating performance. The risk of overloading the polyetheramine or ‘B’ side of the system has always been too great. The development of Suprasec 2154 prepolymer has changed all that allowing formulators to achieve B2 Norm, when used in combination with FR grades of polyol. The new chemistry has successfully created a prepolymer that can be used as a drop-in for Suprasec 2054.
