Flame retardants play an important role in meeting code requirements as well as product performance requirements in polyurethane foam applications. ICL-IP America, Inc. (ICL‑IP) has developed and continues to develop new flame retardant products to meet the ongoing challenges of today’s market where superior performance in fire tests is only one criterion on a long list that must be considered in the new product development effort. In recent years there has been increasing demand and market acceptance for new reactive, polymeric and/or halogen-free flame retardant products with the expectation that these new product offerings carry with them improvements in their health, safety and environmental characteristics. This paper presents ICL-IP’s ongoing development activities to create, evaluate and commercially introduce new flame retardant products for the flexible polyurethane foam market.
