Four years after MOU - BASF Polyurethanes breaks ground in Chongqing

As early as 2006, the Mayor of Chongqing Municipal People's Government and BASF started discussions on the idea of an MDI plant in Chongqing. In 2007, BASF and Chongqing signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for this project. After intensive discussions and planning, the vision finally started to come together and breaking ground means that plans for a state-of-the-art 400 kt/y MDI plant will now become reality within approximately three years time.

"We have created a vision of an enormous scale, a new world-class greenfield chemical site in the west of China! To bring such an idea to life it takes endurance and lots of energy, but most importantly strong partners. It takes reliable partners who are becoming friends - friends who trust in each other" stated  Dr. Martin Brudermueller, Member of the Board of Directors of BASF SE, responsible for Asia Pacific during the recent ceremony.

BASF sees the production facility not just as an investment in a chemical plant but as and investment built on the commitment, expertise, and the dedication of people in western China. The project involving staff from BASF and Chongqing Chemical and Pharmaceutical Holding (Group) Company (CCDHGC) involves sharing BASF's culture of safe, sustainable and responsible behaviour with suppliers, partners, customers, and the industrial community. With USD 1.2 billion coming from BASF SE, the project is expected to cost a total of USD 5.3 billion making it the largest investment in a petroleum and gas chemical project of any German company in central and western China.

With the state-owned CCDHGC as its co-investor, the project is expected to realise an annual production value of CNY 50 billion (USD 7.64 billion) and generate CNY 10 billion in tax.
