BANGLADESH: Plastic goods export falls significantly in EU; exporters looking for new markets

Local plastic goods exporters are searching for new destinations following slow growth of their shipments to the existing major markets, especially the European Union, said industry leaders.

They said due to Euro zone crises the demand for plastic products in the EU
has declined significantly this year.

"So we have planned to search for fresh markets to overcome the situation," said Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) president Jasimuddin.

He said they are trying to grab the markets in China and Africa to export plastic products.

"A delegation of the BPGMEA will go to South Africa and Botswana in March next year to conduct a survey over the potentiality for exporting plastic products in those markets," said Jasimuddin.

"We can begin the overseas sale of plastic products in China within six months," the BPGMEA
leader mentioned.

"If we can explore those markets properly we will be able to export a huge quantity of plastic products there," the leading exporter said.

"Plastic house-hold and packaging products have a huge demand in China"

But the products have to be better quality and in competitive price, said sector leaders.

The government should reduce the shipment charge and provide cash incentive to ensure better quality and price competitiveness as it is very necessary to catch the foreign consumers, said sector leaders.

They also urged the government to set up an industrial park to ensure smooth supply and attract foreign buyers towards the Bangladeshi plastic goods.
