Purac to acquire biotech company Bird Engineering

Purac, a subsidiary of CSM, will acquire Bird Engineering B. V., a Dutch biotech contract research company, specifically in the field of industrial microbiology

The acquisition will include the intellectual property and seven key employees of Bird. The division Bird Recruitment will not be part of the acquisition. Financial details were not disclosed.

Bird has experience with various micro-organisms, mostly bacteria and yeasts, as well as in the development of new strains and fermentation processes. The company focuses on the use of micro-organisms and enzymes for the production of bio-based materials, e. g. bio-FDCA and bio-chemical building blocks, replacing materials based on fossil carbohydrates.

Purac is a producer of lactic acid and its derivatives, lactic acid-based bioplastics and bio-based chemicals.
