THAILAND: Asahi Kasei licenses PMMA technology to PTT

Asahi Kasei Chemicals has made a decision to grant a license of its manufacturing technology for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) of Thailand.

PTT, a major Thai enterprise with operations in oil refining, natural gas, and petrochemicals, is a partner of Asahi Kasei Chemicals in the joint venture PTT Asahi Chemical Co., Ltd. (PTTAC), a manufacturer of acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with new plants in Thailand which began full-scale commercial operation this January.

The technology license enables PTT to achieve its plan to produce 40,000 tons of PMMA per year using MMA from PTTAC, while enhancing PTTAC’s MMA derivatives business. Asahi Kasei Chemicals will continue to strengthen its relationship with PTT through this license, in addition to the partnership in operation of PTTAC.

PMMA is a synthetic resin which is characterized by high transparency, surface hardness, and chemical resistance. With its long-lasting beautiful gloss, it has been called the “Queen of Plastics.” Based on these characteristics, it is used in a wide range of applications in automotive, optical, and industrial fields, as well as consumer goods.
