Tempur Sealy plans expansion of Duffield plant

Tempur Sealy International said it plans to expand its 500,000-square-foot factory in Duffield, Virginia, US as part of a 13.5 million USD project. The expansion will create 42 new jobs. The plant, which makes Tempur-Pedic mattresses and pillows, and pours the company's proprietary memory foam formulation, was opened in 2001. It currently has about 300 employees.

Details of the expansion were not disclosed, but a statement released by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said the project includes the purchase of new equipment that will improve the company's manufacturing operations.

"This expansion will allow the company to continue to grow their presence and product line in the commonwealth," the governor said in the statement. "Tempur Sealy benefits from the cost of business and the quality of the labor force in the region, and this project enables facility upgrades and improvements that ensure innovative process development and future viability of the manufacturing operation in Scott County."

The state kicked in 150,000 USD from the Governor's Opportunity Fund and 182,000 USD from the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission for the project.

The plant is one of two U.S. factories that make Tempur-Pedic bedding. The other is an 800,000-square-foot facility in Albuquerque, N.M., that opened in 2007.
