KOREA (SOUTH): Hyosung advances building schedule for polyketone project

Hyosung announced it is three months ahead of schedule in the construction of South Korea’s first polyketone production facility and
now anticipates completion in March 2015.

In disclosing plans for the 50,000-t/y plant in Ulsan last year, Hyosung said it had “succeeded in the development of ‘polyketone,’ a new state-of-the-art, high-performance polymeric material based on the first original technology of its kind developed in the world.”

Hyosung claims that its “impact-strength” polyketone offers a 30% improvement in chemical resistance over nylon, has 14 times greater wear resistance than polyacetal, and off-gas properties that are equivalent to ethylene vinyl alcohol.

Cho Hyun-sang, vice president of the company, noted that this material will be Hyosung’s “core business” in the future. By 2020, Hyosung plans to invest a total of 1.05-trillion won in the polyketone business. The Ulsan investment totals 125-billion won.
