New SBCs for gas barrier, gel applications and glass adhesion
TEM mixing investigation: Morphology of KL-7135 vs. conventional HSBC-based compound (formulation: HSBC/process oil/random PP = 100/100/40)
This material achieves superior oxygen (OTR) and water vapor transmission rates (WVTR). The material performs significantly better than conventional HSBCs (up to 500 % lower OTR and 40 % lower WVTR). In particular the new material has a good ratio of barrier and elasticity. It competes with traditional medium barrier materials and shows improved homogeneity compared to conventional HSBC materials. TEM investigation show morphologies with fine dispersed Hybrar/oil domains islands while PP is building matrix. Its excellent compatibility with PP results in compounds with a well-dispersed microstructure. Compounds containing Hybrar KL-7135 deliver added value in the area of construction devices, acoustic parts, sports goods, various plugs and medical devices.
Another new product highlighted at Fakuma is Septon J. The product is a developed TPE resulting from the further enhancement of the company’s accumulated polymer design and synthesis technologies. The Septon J series was designed to achieve the optimal balance between the aforementioned physical properties and processability in a more flexible, low-hardness compound. It retains excellent mechanical performance, including low density, good compression set, high-strength and tear resistance, and the low-temperature performance of existing Septon products. In addition, the Septon J series shows better shock absorption and vibration dampening performance than conventional low-hardness compounds. Because of these unique properties - as a soft, low-hardness gel and as a material that achieves distinctive and superior performance - applications for the Septon J Series are expected to expand into such high-performance applications as medical and nursing care products, personal comfort goods, sports goods, industrial components, and E & E components.
The third product that will be highlighted at Fakuma is Kurarity. It is basically an acrylic triblock TPE polymerized from butylacrylate and methylmethacrylate. The product offers PMMA-like optics with tailor-matched soft elasticity. Another advantage is its durability including weather/UV resistance and a good abrasion resistance. Kurarity is suitable for compounding or for two-component applications. For flexibilization purposes or elasticity modification, the material can be combined with polar materials such as PC, PMMA or ABS. Currently there is a growing demand for this product especially in the field of consumer goods and automotive parts (e. g. instrument panels, dashboards skins, inner door grips, parking levers, shift grips, steering wheel covers and assist grips).
Septon K is a new development for advanced adhesion strength to various materials. Glass, metals and non-polar polymers show good adhesion properties without any surface treatments (elimination of primers). Target applications are in the field of automotive (glasses, body, chassis components and covering materials), E & E and household (window weather stripping, computer and mobile phones components). Alongside these new developments Kuraray will also inform at Fakuma about its full range of elastomeric materials including Septon Q (TPE with durable performance), Septon V (crosslinkable HSBCs) and KLR (Kuraray liquid rubber).
