Odourless organic peroxide for synthetic rubber soles

With Luperox FreeO bis-isopropyl benzene peroxide, Arkema says it offers footwear manufacturers an odourless alternative to current technologies commonly used in synthetic rubber crosslinking. 0The new product releases no malodorous or persistent VOCs, says the company.

According to Arkema, sports shoes and some outdoor shoe types with soles made of synthetic rubber, namely expanded EVA 1, are known for releasing a strong and persistent odour. This smell is due to the crosslinking agents used today in the footwear industry releasing VOCs, in particular acetophenone, which has a strong and persistent odour, even in finished goods several months after manufacture. Luperox FreeO is said to offer good crosslinking performance (typically 40 % lower dosage than other crosslinking agents) and ease of use (available as solid flakes, it is fully miscible with EVA). A number of world-renowned shoe brands have already successfully opted for the product, says Arkema.
