BorsodChem puts new TDI plant into trial operation

BorsodChem Zrt, the Hungarian subsidiary of Chinese Wanhua Industrial Group, has put its new TDI-2 plant at its site in Kazincbarcika into trial operation, after EUR 80 million was provided by Wanhua to resume the construction last autumn.

The new plant has an annual nameplate capacity of 160 kt, which, if market demand requires, can be increased by another 40 kt to reach 200 kt/y. Upon successful completion of the trial period, which is expected to last for about two months, the new plant will bring the total TDI capacity of the company to 250 kt/y and position it as Europe's number one TDI manufacturer, says BorsodChem.

According to the company, the new plant will operate considerably more efficiently than the existing TDI-1 plant. Due to the current unfavourable cost evolution of input materials, however, it is expected that the new plant will run at full capacity only at a later stage.

BorsodChem is currently also carrying out a revamp of its MDI-2 plant in Kazincbarcika to increase its capacity from the current 150 kt/y to 240 kt/y. With the help of technology know-how from Wanhua, this investment will further improve product quality as well as consistency and stability of supply, says BorsodChem. In order to complete the revamp, the MDI-2 plant will be shut down for a period of seven weeks, starting from 22 July 2011.
