Szycher’s Handbook of Polyurethanes, Second Edition

Michael Szycher (ed.), CRC Press, Boca Raton, 2nd ed., 2012, 1,126 p., hardcover, USD 199.95, ISBN 978-1-4398-3958-4

The first edition of the Szycher’s Handbook of Polyurethanes was published by CRC Press LLC in 1999. It consisted of 22 chapters, four appendices and had 696 pages. The second edition has been in general greatly expanded and updated, a total of 430 pages and eight new chapters were added. The first 22 chapters of this edition have the same titles as those in the first edition, five of them are substantially revised, expanded and updated. The 22 chapters cover the important detailed information on polyurethane science and technology and applications. This includes basic chemistry, structures and properties, processing, PU foams, adhesives, coatings, water-borne polyurethanes, polyurethane elastomers, compounding ingredients, and a very thorough and detailed chapter on medical applications. There is also a section summarising vital contents from US patent literature and even some full texts of important patents.

The new added chapters are: Resorbable Polyurethanes; Biodurable Polyurethanes; Antimicrobial Polyurethanes; Hydrophilic Polyurethanes; Biocompatibility Tests; Eco-Friendly Polyurethanes; Processing Thermoplastic Urethanes via Twin-Screw Extruder; Infrared Analysis of Medical-Grade Polyurethane Elastomers: Can Durometer Hardness Be Determined by IR Analysis?
The book is written by a total of seven co-authors and Szycher as the editor; he is also the author or co-author of 27 of the total 30 chapters.

Szycher’s Handbook of Polyurethanes, Second Edition is a practical handbook and reference resource useful to a very wide range of readers, including technologists, R&D scientists and engineers, university teachers of polymer science and technology, advanced students of chemistry, biochemistry, polymer science and engineering, material science, physicians, attorneys, suppliers, marketers and to anyone interested in science and technology of polyurethanes.
