The materials are said to significantly improve durability of the end products. Also wear resistance and vibration isolation applications of the end products are improved. The elastomer composites are made from latex and reinforcing particles, such as carbon black. The patented process creates composites that are stronger than conventional elastomer materials. Application areas include mining, defence, automotive, and aerospace industries. One of the first applications was in tires. (In 2008, the US company entered into an agreement with Michelin.) Currently available Transfinity products are based on NR latex and carbon black. Cabot said that the technology can be transferred to other polymers (fluoroelastomers, chloroprene, NBR, SBR, etc.) and other reinforcing fillers, like silicas.
