QATAR: Qapco plans construction of new unit to boost Mesaieed ethylene capacity

Qatar Petrochemical Co. (Qapco) plans to spend USD330-million to build a new 400,000-t/y ethylene plant in Mesaieed, Qatar, according to local sources.

“We have plans to increase the installed ethylene production capacity of Qapco from the existing 800,000 t/y to approximately 1.2-million t/y,” reported The Peninsula newspaper, quoting Qapco Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla.

Qapco currently produces about 725,000 t/y of ethylene from its EP1 and EP2 plants in Mesaieed, he noted, adding that the project will include removing constraints to improve production capacity in those units.

“We are almost at the final stages of launching the project,” Al-Mulla said. “If everything goes as per the schedule, it will start operating within the next three years.”
