KAZAKHSTAN Sinopec Engineering, KPI terminate contract for PDH and PP facilities

Sinopec Engineering and Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries (KPI) have terminated an engineering, procurement and construction contract for a propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit and polypropylene (PP) plant to be built in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, according to several published reports.

Last year, KPI awarded Sinopec a $1.85-billion contract for the 500,000-t/y PDH and 500,000-t/y PP project, as well as utilities required by the plants and design, procurement, construction, start-up and assessment of off-site infrastructure.

“Ongoing clarifications and negotiations” with KPI have not resulted in an agreement on “key commercial conditions and other aspects” of the project, said one report quoting Sinopec. This resulted in the mutually agreed termination of the contract.
