Hytrel for award-winning prosthetic foot

Rhythm Foot prosthetic made with Hytrel

Rhythm Foot prosthetic made with Hytrel

The Niagara Foot is a prosthetic that enables improved mobility for people who have lost lower limbs. The part, made of DuPont’s Hytrel, won the gold award in the rehabilitation and assistive-technology products category at this year’s Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA). The foot, in its next generation, is now named the Rhythm Foot.

The flexibility and durability of the polyester elastomer is essential to the prosthetic’s functionality as the artificial limb anatomically mimics biological foot action and movements. Above all it is affordable which means that it is potentially accessible to many people. The inventor, Rob Gabourie, a Canadian board certified prosthetist and owner of Niagara Prosthetics and Orthotics International Ltd. (NPOI), based in Ontario, Canada, estimates that there are more than 20 million people without lower limbs who could benefit from this type of foot.

The MDEA award ceremony was held in May 2012 in conjunction with MD&M East in Philadelphia, PA, USA.
